I have a 1999 LX470 with about 170k. For a while now I've been having a loud engine whine when the car is cold, and it's far worse when it is cold outside. The noise eventually goes away when the car is warm but that can take anywhere between 2-10 minutes depending on the temperature. My car has always started without a hitch but i just noticed this noise while its warming up. Once started it takes about 10-15 seconds to hear. If the belt is rubbing on the pulley due to misalignment or the bearings are worn out your alternator could indeed make a whining noise. Usually, these sounds would be described more as a squeak with the engine belt or a hum with bad bearings, so get your car started, then pop your hood and listen carefully to what the noise sounds like. The noise is from the air being purged from the power steering pump. Even if you cannot do this yourself, it takes no more than 30 minutes to drain the fluid, replace the o-ring, and refill the system. Well, I said it must be a "Ram thing" because I have had 4 Ford 150 trucks (3 V8s and one Ecoboost) living in exactly the same house with the exact same seasons and never once did the F150s screech, whine or howl on start up in the cold like the three 4th generation Ram 1500s have. It whines pretty annoyingly on cold starts, seems to get quieter as it warms up. I removed both drive belts to eliminate the possibility of it being an accessory bearing. At first I thought the timing belt was too tight, but... The squeal on startup is probably caused by the alternator trying to recharge the car battery. On cars with the old analog ammeters, you'd see the needle go over to like 20 amps charging for like 30 seconds. That compensates for the like 200 amps for 3 seconds that the starter drew out. Timing belt (gates kevlar) and tensioner was installed a couple months ago, noise free. May 22, 2010 · Engine is hot now and it only happens when cold. the noise sounds like a high pitched electric motor and slows down like power was shut off to it as engine goes to slow idle. cold start idle is just over 1000 rpm and after about 15 seconds to @650. all operation appears to be normal but noise is there. there are no signals displayed of any issues on computer. Repair or change the gear components if they are damaged. 2. Faulty Steering. A loose steering belt could be the culprit behind a whining noise when accelerating. When it happens, the sound will occur when you are turning the steering wheels. Tightening the belt will solve this issue. 3. There are no hard shift or clunks or anything, but there is a whine that seems to be comping from the engine. As I drive, I can hear the whine and when I stop it goes away. The engine fan operates at full engine RPM for about 30 seconds when first starting a cold car because the fan clutch hasn't kicked in yet. This makes a bunch of noise and is normal for this type of fan and clutch. This happens on all BMWs. You should feel a lot of vacuum and when you actually get the cap off, the noise will likely stop. It can cause a check engine light for unmetered air eventually. Noise wasn't there a few days ago and can be heard from outside the car. It's still coming from around the alternator. Still no Batt light on the dash, so it's still functional. If the noise is new and you think there is an issue beyond normal cold weather effects, you will want to service all of the fluids. The noise is from the air being purged from the power steering pump. Try removing the oil cap with the engine idling while the noise is happening. You should feel a lot of vacuum and when you actually get the cap off, the noise will likely stop. On cars with the old analog ammeters, you'd see the needle go over to like 20 amps charging for like 30 seconds. That compensates for the like 200 amps for 3 seconds that the starter drew out. There are no hard shift or clunks or anything, but there is a whine that seems to be comping from the engine. As I drive, I can hear the whine and when I stop it goes away. In cold weather it shrinks allowing air to be sucked in to the pump. The alternator will also make a whining sound as well. That is either a sign of a bad battery or a alternator on it's way out. The engine fan operates at full engine RPM for about 30 seconds when first starting a cold car because the fan clutch hasn't kicked in yet. That noise you hear on cold mornings is most likely the under hood belt tensioner. The accessory belt runs your power steering pump, water pump, and alternator and it's tensioner tends to make a hi-pitched whine when it gets cold out.
